With all the talk about fine wine making, vitis vinifera and ripping our hybrids, it’s interesting to point out that Ontario has made its reputation on the back of a hybrid, Vidal. So it’s not surprising that the folks at Fielding have another icewine-hybrid to introduce – something they discovered in the Finger Lakes (NY) and after trial and error while trying to make table wine they tried their hand at icewine and found the magic formula for Vignoles. A nose of pineapple, peach and floral greet the olfactories; while the palate continues with the pineapple and adds honeyed peach, pear along with more tropical notes and a pleasingly long finish. Only 39 cases of 200ml bottles were produced. With only 2 rows (600 vines) planted this is a rarity and they are the only Ontario winery to be growing it, so it’s unique to the area as well. Price: $34.95 / 200ml – Rating: ****
