Inniskillin 2007 Riesling Icewine
I would say that Riesling is the second biggest icewine in Ontario, right next to Vidal. Those who have paid attention to the icewine scene know that we (Ontario wineries) make icewine from anything that grows (grape-wise), but Riesling seems to have taken a real foothold as the second white grape for this style of wine (in Ontario – it has been forever been making Eiswein in Germany), it just seems that it makes a more finesseful icewine. Where Vidal is familiar, Riesling can have added depth of character and more elegant flavours. Inniskillin, as one of the forefathers of icewine have been on the cusp of this style for many years, I have an Inniskillin Riesling Icewine from 1999 that I plan to open very soon to test the longevity of Riesling sweeties. This newer version has got what you’d expect honeyed apricots, apples and sweet peach with good balancing acidity. If Vidal is the apple pie of icewine then Riesling is the dollop of ice cream on top. Price: $69.95 / 375ml
