Lailey 2007 Cabernet Franc
Many of winemakers Derek Barnett’s previous Franc’s have been stellar, and I’m not just talking about their drinkability in the now I’m talking about their ageability for future drinking. I have recently been fortunate enough to try some of his earlier work from his days at Southbrook, some as old as 10 years, and I was thrilled that these wines were still very much alive in bottle and glass. That’s just how Mr. Barnett rolls, and how he has been making wine since the very beginning … offering pleasure now but those with a little patience will find rewards in future tastings. Now, give Derek “the vintage of the century” to work with and see what he can do. This wine is surely a next decade drinker but also shows well on the nose and palate now. Loaded with great Franc smells that translate into great Franc flavours on the tongue: vanilla, plum, blackberry, tobacco, spice cinnamon and raspberry along with silky tannins and a great mouth-feel that’s fresh with balancing acidity. This wine is truly a food lovers dream because it will pair with so much. Price: $30.00 – Rating: *****
