Big Head 2014 Pinot Gris, Hunter Vineyard

Big Head has a new home, it’s in Niagara-on-the-Lake and housed at Hunter Vineyard, which has 20 year old Pinot Gris vines … many know Big Head and its winemaker, Andrzej Lipinski as the appassimento-man in Ontario or the dried fruit doctor of wine – but here it’s all fresh fruit yet still has that Andrzej signature weight in the mouth. Using older barrels, wild and malolactic ferments this wine saw 40% skin contact for 10 hours. You’ll find hints of sweet peach (fresh and pit) with lemon zest – but even with all the sweetness up-front the wine ends quite dry.  Price: $21.00 – Rating: *** ½
