2014 was not kind to Nyarai Cellars that is why we never saw a Viognier from that vintage, instead it was blended away into the 2014 Reve (white blend), but here comes the 2015 and it is back with a vengeance. It starts off pretty calm and mellow with aromas of grapefruit zest and peach – one could easily mistake this for Sauvignon Blanc, another staple in Nyarai’s small stable – even the palate shows signs of the Blanc with plenty of citrus pith-like bitterness on the long persistent finish … but in sweeps pineapple on the nose and the entry into the mouth is also of the tropical fruit nature, before it turns citrus mid-palate, so the wine seems to be a mix of Sauvignon Blanc notes and Viognier though owner and winemaker Steve Byfield claims it’s all Viognier … and it is a beauty.
