Hawke’s Bay, or so I am told, within ten years will be known for Syrah – it’s really already halfway there; some of the best New Zealand Syrah already comes from there. This Stables Reserve got its name from the historic racing stables that house the winery. Limited oak aging (90 days) in 30% 1 year old oak … the rest is even older … leather and raspberry on the nose with some violet and pepper nuances. Palate is full-on peppery with some raspberry and spiced-black cherry. Price: $22.95 – Rating: ****+
