Masseria Vigne Vecchie 2012 Aglianico Sannio, “Iacco”

A little back-and-forth between barrel and tank winemaking here: first 6 months in stainless steel then one year in barrel; wine then moves back into tank to age an additional 2 years, when it is finally bottled it spends 4 months in glass before release.  The result is more fruit driven then one would expect: aromas of plum and black cherry, while on the palate the supple tannins help to prop up the plum and black cherry from the nose, there are also hints of herbal, licorice and toasty notes.  Drink 2-5 years.  Rating: ****
