Second in the two-pronged ‘volcanic series’ of wines from the folks at Piccini is this Aglianico del Vulture (grape) made in the volcanic Basilicato region with its full-on volcanic soils. After 1 and-a-half to 2 years in medium toast French barrels the wine has developed notes of blackberry, black cherry, rhubarb and vanilla, along with notes of mint and tar … that last descriptor might not be all that exciting, but mixed in with all the others it fits right alongside and makes for a complex and delicious wine.
