Reif Estate 2007 First Growth Cabernet-Merlot
A 50/50 blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot with the Cab aged in 70% American and 30% Hungarian and the Merlot in 100% French ... it would seem that forests from around the world play a part in bringing this wine to your table. Aged separately for 30 months and then barrel selected for suitability in the blend. The nose is where you can tell the attributes of this wine; the flinty comes from the Merlot, the dark fruit is definitely from the Cabernet. The palate shows signs that age really will benefit it, mineral notes with big tannins which at this stage of its evolution make it rough around the edges, but time will aid in its mellowing. Lie down for 2-4 years then give it a go ... should drink well 2013-2018 ... or if you insist on opening a bottle now, be sure to decant. Price: $50.00 - Rating: ****
