Closson Chase 2017 Pinot Noir, Sterling Barrique

A 4-barrel output from barrels made at Carriage Cooperage House (in Prince Edward County) from Sterling, Ontario oak (20 km north of the County) – with 18 months of aging in these barrels, that are now 2-3 year old, and two of which used to house Chardonnay, before being changed over to Pinot. 50% of the juice was free-run, the other 50% was from pressing and all the fruit came from the Churchside vineyard (directly across the road from the winery). Results are not as complicated as the process, in fact they speak for themselves: rich and smoky at the start, but seems to mellow with time in glass – strawberry, cherry, hints of rhubarb with lovely floral and dark fruit notes on the finish … might be one of Keith Tyers best experiments with Pinot Noir to date and one of Closson’s most charming Pinot ever.  Price: $44.95 – Rating: ****+
