Malivoire 2007 Moira Vineyard Pinot Noir
This wine was a long time in the making and coming to market. 2007 was such a hot vintage that it did wonders for red grape production in Ontario – except maybe Pinot Noir. Pinot prefers a cooler growing season than what the 13 weeks of hot, drought-like conditions of 2007 offered, hence it was difficult to get Pinot to do what you wanted it to. The Moira is a complex wine loaded with a variety of fruit, barrel and je-ne-sais-quoi notes. There’s definitely sour cherry, raspberry and strawberry interwoven with a touch of cocoa-powder-tannins and a black cherry finish. The finish kept impressing the more I tasted this wine, and the flavours continued to complexify (I hope this is a word – if not I’ll lay claim to it right now). Those who want to get the best deal on this bottle of Pinot listen up … the wine will be futures priced at $49.95 during Malivoire’s May 15 tasting event at the winery, after that it will be officially released in the fall for $59.95 a bottle. Only 120 cases produced. Price: $59.95 – Rating: ****½
