My favourite Ontario grape (Cabernet Franc) also makes some of my favourite icewines because no matter how sweet they rise on the sugar code they always seem to lack the sticky cloyingness of Vidals. This superb wine has been re-issued by Vineland and is $42 for 200ml, but if you’ve never experienced a Cabernet Franc icewine, it is a taste treat well worth the price of admission. The nose is sweet and lush with strawberries, cherries and raspberries doused in pure chocolate … the taste shies away from the chocolate that is so upfront on the nose and gives way to a strawberry-rhubard pie sensation on the tongue. A little thick and syrupy, but what slice of heaven isn’t?
