Vineland Estates 2004 Cabernet Franc
I continue to be big fan of Ontario Cabernet Franc, I really do believe it is our grape to do great things with (more on that in an upcoming article). Historically, Franc has been an old world blending grape for many years, taking a backseat to its much more famous son, Cabernet Sauvignon (Cab Sauv is a cross between Cab Franc and Sauvignon Blanc) … here is yet another prime example of how we here in Ontario can make great straight Franc. There’s some typical herbaceous aromas here like bell pepper, but not overpowering. What really comes out is the deep red fruit scents along with some rhubarb mixed-in with hints of vanilla and mocha. But where this wine really shines is in the mouth – lush, velvety with a smooth easy medium-long finish. Great sweet cherry taste which appears about mid-palate, light spicy finish and a good replay at the end. This is one fine Franc. No need to age though, drink up now.
