Vieni Estates 2013 Appassimento Classic Method Private Reserve

A classical Italian grape takes center stage here: Aglianico (39%) with Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot all air-dried naturally for 2-4 months , it is then aged 3 years in oak and 6-8 months in bottle before release … that’s why it is called classic, because it is made using the classic Amarone-method … in a year like 2013 this method of winemaking makes sense in Ontario – when the grapes needed that help, to concentrate their flavours: lots going on here as both earthy and fruity nuances play off against each other: cassis, blackberry, subtle oak and bittersweet chocolate all show up now and even more is expected in the next 2-3 years. This is a well-made Ontario-version of a Veneto-classic.  Price: $59.95 – Rating: ****+
