Bachelder 2017 Pinot Noir, “Two Barrels” – Saunders Vineyard

Talk about a shocker of a wine – these vines were planted in 2013 and suffered through two brutal winters, plus they are organically grown and certified, and while this wine was made from 4th leaf fruit there is a layered complexity here that goes well beyond the age of these vines. Light in colour but deep in flavour with cherry, black-cranberry, white pepper, spice, violets, mineral and earthiness – all leading to a long, luscious cran-strawberry finish – there’s even a subtle smokiness here. It’s intense and concentrated and aged in 3-year-old barrels, so oak does not intrude … with some time in glass a pretty cranberry and white smoke also emerges. Simply a very pretty Pinot … nice to see what the next 20+ years will be like for wines made from these vines.  Price: $38.95 – Rating: **** ½
