From the Cellar

Just because I started a website called OntarioWineReview.com doesn't mean it's All-Ontario-All-the-Time. When I kick back at night my mood (and sometimes my curiosity) decides my wine of choice. And the title should read, "Uncorked and Un-Screwed Tonight" ... but that just sounds wrong.

Rocca Delle Macie 2002 Rubizzo (Italy)

01 Nov 2015

(June 10, 2015) ... I have been rather lucky when it comes to my cellar, I have inventory some cellars that have dozens of leaky bottles, but my luck seems to be holding as I have seen very few in my own cellar (and as I type this with my right hand I am knocking on wood with the left). Today was the exception as the leaky cork on this bottle forced me to take notice and open it ... Aromas were of dried plum (prune), fig, and dried cherry; palate follows in lock-step with the nose. It was an interestingly odd, smooth, and drinkable wine, still with a nice balance of acidity and just a touch of sweet cedar on the finish. Gotta love these old Italian wines with character.

Pedroncelli 2007 Bushnell Vineyard Zinfandel (California)

01 Nov 2015

(June 7, 2015) ... I remember the first time I tried this wine was at the California Wine Fair held in Toronto ... I was so impressed I put my hands on 6 bottles, sharing the other six with a colleague (it could only be bought by the case). Great depth of flavour, is what I remember most, and a price that seemed too good for words. Needless to say I enjoyed this wine a few times between now and then, but here we are 8 years from vintage and time to try it again. This is everything I want Zin to be: aromas are an intoxicating blend of plum, black cherry, cherry cola, Christmas spice, and cocoa; palate had a spiced plum, black pepper, vanilla, mocha-raspberry quality and a spicy finish with just the right balancing acidity ... Made for a perfect pairing with the BBQ ribs, and the 14.9% alcohol was barely a factor.
