Chateau des Charmes 2010 Merlot, St. David's Bench
The fruit for this Merlot comes from the Chateau side of the vineyard (instead of across the road on the Paul Bosc side). It's aged 12 months in oak and starts off as a typical Ontario Merlot ... meaning it needs a little time to come into its own. A nose of blueberry, raspberry and black pepper leads to the charge here. Flavours start out a little raw with white pepper and blueberry skin along with chalky tannins. I think this wine needs 2-3 years to mellow and smooth out, at which point I foresee a juicy core of fruit. Give it some time and a chance to be the wine you really want and it'll get there.
