Hillebrand 2009 Showcase Chardonnay, Wild Ferment, Oliveira Vineyard
The thing I like about wild ferment wines is that they are atypical wines… there’s just something about them that makes them interesting in an odd sort of way. Take the Oliveira vineyard wild ferment Chardonnay; WARNING: what I’m about to say about this wine might be a bit off-putting for those who have a pre-conceived notion of what Chardonnay should be. Here the nose has a funky asparagus-vegetation note; the palate is of over-ripe peach, lime cordial with toasty (over) ripe fruit. All very strange, yet you keep coming back sip after sip totally intrigued by what it has to offer. Is it the 12 months in oak, the 25% new oak? Nope, it’s definitely its wild nature coming out.
