Organized Crime 2007 Riesling
My first conscious experience drinking an Andrzej Lipinski wine was a 2004 Semi-Dry Riesling from Fielding – it was a sublime experience and made me stand up and take notice of this winemaker. Now, some 4 years later, I have noticed him again. Not that Andrzej has been quiet; he has been making wine for a number of wineries for the past few years, especially new projects, like the Organize Crime winery in Beamsville. He first got them noticed by winning an Ontario Wine Award medal for their 2006 Gewurztraminer. He has now shown that this winery and is adjoining vineyard were no fluke, with a stunning 2007 Riesling from their 10 year old vines and a yield of 2.2 tons per acre (as oppose to the 3.5 for the 2006 version). That concentration of fruit brought about a nose rich in floral, mineral, and citrus, with a touch of apple and peach to round it off. In the mouth, there’s a lovely peachiness with apple, mineral-stoniness and a bit of floraled-honey. In the glass, it has a barely noticeable crystal clear colour (so pale you barely recognize it as wine), but in the mouth, it makes its presence felt with a long lingering finish. It was soft released in the early summer, as the winery still had some of the 2006 left on the shelf, and the price parallels the quality (raising up 5 dollars from last year) – only 120 cases were produced, only 45 remain and it’s going fast. Price: $21.00
