I have tried the Sir Williams Perry – a cider made from pears – sold at the LCBO, and I can say without a doubt that this Perry puts the English version to shame. “They mass produce theirs,” says Mike Vansteenkiste, owner of Twin Pines, “ours is made in very small batches.” It must be small ‘cuz Mike can’t even remember how many pear trees they actually have, “I’d hate to hazard a guess and be wrong, but it’s not a lot.” Wonderful pear flavour is the hallmark of this perry, thought it’s on a very subtle level – you know its pear, it just doesn’t try to slam you in the face with it.
