Famous people making wine have come to Niagara with a vengeance … first it was Creekside with their Mike Weir label, then came Coyote’s Run with Bob Izumi wines; Dan Aykroyd picked up the baton a few months ago with Diamond Estates at the helm and now Creekside gets into bed with another sports superstar, no. 99 himself: Wayne Gretzky. Instead of wondering who’s next, let’s look at what Gretzky has brought to the bottle. The nose is tropical fruit in nature with pineapple and apple notes being the most distinctive … the palate remains fruity with pleasant apple and pear flavours, there might also be some delicate peach, which drifts in and out of the mouth depending on the sip. Smooth, drinks well, but nothing for long term aging, afterall it’s unoaked. Drink now and over the next year or two, best when the weather is hot, and the wine is well chilled.
