Wayne Gretzky 2007 Estate Series Shiraz Cabernet
This is the quintessential Aussie blend, made by an Aussie winemaker – so who better to put it all together here in Ontario. This 66% Shiraz, 34% Cabernet was aged 22 months in older America and some French oak. Many say that “Shiraz” can’t be made in Niagara (instead it should be the more delicate Syrah), but winemaker Craig McDonald disagrees with this assessment saying that it’s all about where you grow it – this Shiraz is grown in the warmer locale of the St. David’s bench (near Niagara-on-the-Lake). The nose is loaded with blackberry, cedar, vanilla, black cherry and black pepper; on the palate the oak seems to have integrated well showing little sign of the 22 month oak treatment, instead there’s peppery, spice, black cherry and silky tannins … a well made Shiraz Cabernet and one that truly earns its labelling as Shiraz.
