Vineland Estates 2010 Pinot Meunier
Their website reads "Act One beats Act Two ..." as you scratch your head I will explain: in 2009 winemaker Brian Schmidt created the first bottling of what is now to become a staple at Vineland, a red wine made from the lowly Pinot Meunier - the also-ran grape of Champagne. His first effort proved very rewarding and this 2010 effort surpasses the inaugural, hence Act Two has bested Act One. This is a lightly coloured wine, a la Pinot family reds, the nose doles out cranberry, cherry, red currant and hints of cassis; the taste is bright and fruit driven with red currant and cranberries taking centre stage; with time in glass white pepper-style spiciness emerges. Very good second effort. Price: $17.95 - Rating ****+
