Tawse 2007 Sketches Cabernet-Merlot
In 2005 and 2006 this wine was known as Echos, this year, because of demand from restauranteurs, Tawse decided to draw the line between what restaurants could have and what consumers could get - in essence giving restaurants an exclusive label that consumers couldn't … thus to drink the Echos you must go out, to enjoy Sketches you stay in. Another change is that the grape varieties are clearly marked on the label, "‘Red’ left too much open to interpretation," winemaker Paul Pender told me, "there's a focus on varietal wines over simple proprietary blend names." In other words, if you're just gonna calling it ‘Red’ you might as well tell us what reds are in the bottle. From the great 2007 vintage this wine truly delivers both on the nose and in the mouth. Black fruit, sour cherry, herbs and spice, good acidity, silky tannins and a nice vanilla nuance on the finish; no doubt an influence from the eleven months in oak. Finally, another change to the wine is the price … a respectable and affordable $19.95 … down five bucks from previous years. "During these tough economic times," says Paul with a wink, "we want you to drink well." And drink well for a decade at that. Price: $19.95 - Rating: **** ½
