Fielding 2005 Meritage (Reserve)
I just knew it was too early to open this one when I popped the cork and a wood stave conked me on the head; but seriously, this is a monster red that needs time to settle. I tried it upon opening, then again 24 hours later, here's what I determined. Right now: woody-cedary notes, very tight nose with green pepper and black licorice ... 24 hours later: beautiful fruit nuances of plum and raspberry. Right now: weighty tannins that fuzzy-up the tongue, a spoonful of cocoa powder and very black fruits, when they decide to show up ... 24 hours later: yes the black fruits comeback but they are soft and supple, juicy blackberries and cassis, even some black raspberries and cherries were detected. Conclusion: without a decanter or a big thick rib-eye you’re in a lot of trouble now; this one needs time to open up before the fruit will show and the oakiness dissipates; lie this down and pick up a Fielding Cab Sauv for right now – wait three years before you decide to disturb this one again ... then enjoy over the next five to seven.
