Ontario Reviews

Featherstone 2005 Riesling
So here’s a good one for you … a winery owner I know, (who soon will be moving to Niagara), was overheard saying “Ontario Riesling doesn’t sell, which is why we don’t make it.” Well, maybe he should talk to the other wineries in Niagara before making such statements to find out how quickly Riesling actually does sell, and I do mean out. This year alone, I know of a few wineries that released their Rieslings, “because my accountants told me to” as one Niagara winemaker/owner put it. That doesn’t mean the Rieslings weren’t good – in fact the ’05 Rieslings have, for the most part, been amazing, but they were released on to store shelves a little earlier than they should have been; due, in most cases, to the fact that the ’04’s had already sold out. Riesling, as we all well know is a great summertime wine. Many of the Rieslings I purchased in April and May, should have been held until July, allowing them optimal time to settle in the bottle and get over their bottle-shock. I was lucky enough to put off this review until now, because I know Dave Johnson makes a good Riesling, and I wanted to give it a little more bottle-time. So how’s it’s drinking you ask? Very nice is my reply. The nose is rich with soft apple aromas and some stone fruit, namely peaches and nectarines. The taste is a little more forceful, with some tart citrus notes present as it hits the back palate, but leaves behind a smooth medium finish. When all is said and done, this semi-sweetie is a nice, light, refreshing sipper – and at this price it can’t be beat for a good quality Ontario Riesling. Betcha they sell out, again.
