Hillebrand 2009 Ghost Creek Riesling
This is the second year in a row the Ghost Creek Riesling has been made this way – that means it is the second year in a row it is below 8% alcohol and is remarkable. That’s because former Hillebrand winemaker, Darryl Brooker, makes this one to taste and not by the numbers. At 7.9% alcohol and a 2 on the sugar code you’d think it sweet and summertime cooler like (you know those funny pop like drinks: Darryl’s Hard Lemonade) – but wait – before y’all go running away from this wine let me tell you a little more about it. There is great acidity amongst the sweetness, which makes the wine taste less sweet than it actually is. Apple and peach lead the charge on the nose; crisp and steely in the mouth with a medium length finish loaded with lime – and the best part is, this wine keeps getting better and better with each sip. Only 500 cases were made, and while that’s double last year’s output there’s just won’t seem like there was enough made once it’s all sold out. This one has some really good ageing potential – so do buy a few and lie some down for a few years, if you can manage to keep your cotton-pickin’ hands off of it. Price: $25.00 – Rating: *****
