Cesari 2016 Amarone della Valpolicella Classico
To kick things off there’s a heavy coffee bean note on the nose followed by some sweet black fruit and vanilla, black cherry, coffee, chocolate; plus good acidity and nice tannin structure. It’s a little chewy, black fruited with a full on smoky finish, but there’s also a lovely long linger ... ready now, but could age a number of years (7-10). (**** 1/2)

Byland Estate 2019 Gamay Noir Reserve
On this 10-acre plot of land, owner/grower Jackson Bai tends 2 acres of Gamay by hand. It’s a 35+ year old vineyard that is just beautiful for the grape varieties he lovingly grows (which also includes Riesling and Chardonnay). The wine spends 8 months in oak, one-third of which is new, and all French – the rest sits in 2nd and 3rd fill barrels. This Gamay has a nice backbone of red fruit balanced out by a dash of white pepper. Totally chillable, totally crushable. Sure, it sounds simple, but this kind of simplicity tastes so good.  (****)
