100 Marks 2011 White (Merlot)
A lot of hope and promise goes into this virtual winery's wines run by Marynissen's winemaker Jeff Hundertmark ... the name is a play on his last name ans well as what every winemaker hopes his wines will garner (100 points = marks). While he doesn't hit that plateau here he does a great job of giving us a wine that'll make us talk about his potential for the future. The nose is a perfumed floral spice - it's sexy and has certain parallels to Chardonnay Musque ... so is that what this white is? Nope, it's Merlot with no skin contact, so that it stays white instead of garnering any colour for the skins. There is definitely a musque-ness to the palate as well , with floral and white pepper along with a musky-spice ... which finishes long and florally and a perfumed sweetness. The wine almost defies description - but it si a very good wine in the process. Alas 100 Marks has been put on hiatus because the host winery was not happy with having a competing label being produced there. Let's hope we see Jeff Hundertmark's vision and dream come true sooner rather than later. Price: $19.00 - Rating: ****
