Hillebrand 2010 Showcase RHS Merlot
“RHS” stands for Right Hand Side – this is a wine made from grapes grown on the right hand side of the vineyard from whence they came, so it’s a specific block of grapes and, if memory serves, it’s the first time the Showcase Merlot has been broken down to this type of specific reference – at least on the label anyway. This Merlot might be the second best I’ve tried from the 2010 vintage – a virtual bonanza of riches for great Merlots out of Ontario. A nose of deep, rich dark fruit, cinnamon and smoke; the palate is dark fruited with blueberry skin, robust tannins, cinnamon, smoke and spice … all big and all needing time to be tamed … speaking of big, so is the alcohol, at 14.5%. Price: $40.00 – Rating: **** ½
