Ice House 2005 Northern Ice Vidal
Now here's something fairly unique, a winery devoted 100 percent to the making of icewine ... I say fairly because there is another winery out in Niagara called Royal DeMaria which does the same thing. But the Ice House is a new endeavour started by winemaker Jamie McFarlane, and this, their inaugural offering , is nothing short of fantastic. The nose is exceptional and inviting with peaches, apricot, apple, cinnamon, vanilla and pear all vying for your attention. Now it's time to taste, so let's get our nose out of the glass long enough to put our lips to it. What don't you taste in there is a better question, because so far I've got cinnamon, peach, mango, pear, Apple, papaya, dried fruit of all kinds, and my list just seems to keep growing. It's all rounded out with good attention to balance between sweetness and acidity - making this icewine a pleasure to drink. I can see why this wine is winning some very coveted awards. In fact, to steal a line from an episode of Survivor I once saw: “it's so delicious it's vicious” to have to share.
