Hidden Bench 2009 Felseck Vineyard Gewurztraminer
I've had "discussions" with winemakers and winery owners about pricing of wine. I've heard every justification: hand harvesting and sorting; care in the vineyard, low cropping and thinning - you name it I've heard it. I've also heard the one about how can Ontario wineries get higher prices for their wines when media won't back them? To that I'll always reply, "Good wine fetches the price the market will bear." All of this is preamble to this Hidden Bench Gewurztraminer. You can explain why this Gewurzt is higher priced than most till you're blue in the face, in the end I still get floral, spice, mac apple and lychee on the nose; a good spicy edge on the palate with green apple acidity and more of those floral notes. The part that makes it interesting is the bite on the side of your tongue ... that's the spicy/acidity getting you to take notice of this wine. Whether this wine is worth $30 is something for the consumer to decide once they have tasted it - I'll tell you that it is enjoyable and in my book a solid three-and-a-half star wine. Price: $30.00 - Rating; ***1/2
