Carmela Estates 2002 Riesling
You don’t usually find an aged Riesling on the shelf of a winery with a price tag this low, but I didn’t complain, as I picked up a couple of this ’02. It has softened a bit in the 4 years since the grapes were plucked from the vine and made into wine – currently it has taken on the characteristics of an older Riesling, but the smells are those of a late harvest: sweet tropical notes, honey, lychee and hints of almond. The acidity has mellowed right down leaving a wine with a creamy texture that is light tasting and soft with granny smith apple tartness on the finish that lingers long in the mouth. I also picked up some of those almonds from the nose on the taste. Not sure I would wait much longer to pull the cork on any bottles I (or you) have left, I suspect that within a year or so, it may completely lose it’s fruit, but for this summer, and the rest of the year, it will be quite delicious, take advantage of it and enjoy.
