I’m sure you must be tired of hearing this, but 2002 was a great year for Ontario reds. That said, this Sauv follows in the footsteps of some great ones that came before it … and I am sure some reserves that are still to come. What really got me here was the nose, it hit me with spearmint and sweet red pepper. What followed on the palate was completely different though. A tighter taste that was dominated by ripe firm tannins, black pepper and black fruit. I would say right now, it’s a red meat wine, great for the BBQ – the sweet nose leading to a bitey, mouth-drying, tannic taste. This one needs some time to lie down and mellow, but still drinks quite well now. If you like your wine big, bold and brawny, this is your cup of vino. If you so desire, buy a few and try again in about 5 years – I just know the rewards will be tremendous.
