EastDell Estates 2007 Riesling Icewine
More finesse than heavy-handedness is what set this Icewine apart from the others I tasted during the2009 edition of the Niagara Icewine Festival. The nose was subtle: pear and honeyed apple; but it was on the palate where this wine truly shined. Light, juicy pear, apricot, honeyed apple - and although a 20 on the sugar code it did have that heavy feeling in the mouth, no cloying, no overly-sweet sweetness - just crisp, clean and as Goldilocks would be apt to say (if she did any drinking at the Three Bears’ house) “just right”: the right amount of acidity, sweetness and taste rolled into one. There’s nothing syrupy about it, sheer perfection, if you’ll permit me some hyperbole, with a delicacy of flavour. And it all ends with a light, lively and long finish. Not a bad start for their first ever go at this type of Icewine, not bad at all. Price: $34.95/200ml - Rating: *****
