Mike Weir 2006 Chardonnay
So far Weir’s wines have proven themselves to be the better of our celebrity winery’s products – could that be because they’ve been around longer or because of the winemaking team behind them? Whatever the reason, the Mike Weir wines have been consistently good wines and good values since they first hit the market; rising above the gimmick of celebrity and concentrating first and foremost on the wine in the bottle, not the name on the outside, and they continue to improve year after year. This Chardonnay has some great aromas and flavours that really pop from the glass with just a little bit of a effort from you (by way of swirling). The nose is oaky-vanilla infused with mac apple and a touch each of nutmeg, cinnamon and toffee. In the mouth, smoothness reigns, as the infusion of vanilla and oak settles down into the background, leaving the fruit to come through in the form of apple sweetness at the fore, pear-melon mid and a lingering white peach finish on the tongue. Kudos again to the Weir winemakers (Power and McDonald).
