Strewn 2008 Select Late Harvest Cabernet
I love late harvest wines more than I like icewine; I’m not sure, but I think it has something to do with the price and the sweetness level. Recently, late harvest wines have been getting a bad rap as de-classified icewine; though many wineries are now specifically making late harvest wines, which means they are purposely waiting later into the season to harvest, but not necessarily awaiting the icewine freeze. This delightful pseudo-sweetie, only a 6 on the sugar code, has rich, inviting smells of cherry, honeyed raspberries and a hint of sweet delicious apple. The palate is a different story: tart raspberries and sour cherries take centre stage with a nice balance of palate cleansing acidity – there’s no sweet cloying finish here, instead you get the feeling of fresh, yet tart strawberries – delicious. Price: $18.95 / 375ml – Rating: ****½
