Sometimes the world throws a real head-scratcher at you, like why would anybody make a straight Cabernet Sauvignon in 2009? Well the folks at Calamus did, and pulled it off quite well. The nose is fruit dominant with cassis, red currants, blackberry and black cherry. The wine was aged a whopping 26 months in a mix of French and American oak ... there's plenty of fruit still present along with some ballsy tannins that thankfully don't overwhelm the wine. The finish has hints of spice and white pepper, which compliments the dark berry bowl of fruit that just crossed your palate. Drink over the next 2-3 years. Price: $19.95 - Rating: ****
