These days I'm seeing a trend of making Riesling differently ... purists of Ontario Rieslings will quake a little in their boots if they think of putting Riesling anywhere near a barrel, but some wineries are doing it with some degree of success. Richard Karlo (owner / winemaker) barrel fermented this one off-dry and aged it 3 months in wood, the result is a wine with a little different profile from what you're used to. Aromas are spiced pear while the palate delivers a creaminess not often found in Riesling, yet still keeping good acidity and adding apricot to those spiced pears. Not for the faint of heart.
