Flat Rock Cellars 2010 The Rusty Shed Chardonnay
The Rusty Shed takes it name from an old rusted out shed on the Flat Rock property that owner Ed Madronic refused to paint, and to make sure he did not have to paint it, ever, he named a wine after it. Now, that would mean nothing if it was not a good wine, and year-in and year-out the Rusty Shed continues to rust in th field as the wine gets better - who knows maybe it's the rust leaching into the soil that makes it so good. The nose is most definitely Chardonnay: apple, peach and pear fruit with hints of buttered-caramel and vanilla. The flavours are a mix of wood character and fruit character: buttered-white fruit, apples, hint of banana, unripe peach all course through the mouth; there's a burnt-butter-bitterness on the finish with the replaying acidity, but that only adds to the charm of this wine, plus a caramel peach linger really adds to the enjoyment. This still holds the title as one of my favourite Ontario Chardonnays it has balance, delicacy and finesse yet still holds (for lack of a better term) its balls against the wall.
