Pillitteri 2004 S. L. H. Cabernet Franc
During the Icewine part of the Cab Franc Challenge, the panel had the opportunity to taste 2 wines at two very different ends of both the sweetness and price spectrum … one of those wines was the Pillitteri Select Late Harvest Cabernet Franc made from the second pressing of their icewine grapes. They let these grapes thaw out a little until they are no longer able to use them for certifiable VQA-icewine and then press the remaining juice out of them. What you get is a slightly reduced sugar level (9), with a full throttle icewine like nose. Strawberry and raspberry jam greet the olfactories, inviting one to dive in to the glass … but instead I would suggest taking a sip. Those super sweet smells get reigned in in the mouth, producing a dichotomy of saccharinated strawberry and tart cherry flavours. The wine is balanced between the sweetness and the acidity and is lip-smackingly good, while at the same time proves to be very refreshing.
