Sprucewood Shores 2005 Meritage
As one of the Lake Erie North Shores newest wineries you really don’t expect much to come out of the doors at this early stage that can compete with the already established wineries of the region – factor in the jeunesse of their winemaker and you’d expect decent, but not spectacular wines to be emerging from the cellar door. But what you expect and what is happening are two different things; take this Meritage for instance: The wine spent 18 months in oak, and an additional 5 months in bottle, that’s a pretty smart winemaking decision for someone so young – and it could remain in bottle for even longer, because there’s plenty of power and oomph inside. Good fruit with the backing of butterscotch and vanilla … it follows through on the palate with red fruit flavours and sweet oak. There’s a steady progression to this wine as it runs through your mouth – it starts off dry, turns sweet on the mid-palate and then ends dry … I would say it has good ageing potential too – 3-5 years.
