Jackson-Triggs 2005 Delaine Vineyard Cabernet Merlot
Here we have a small lot (300 cases) single vineyard (Delaine) wine from Jackson-Triggs. 2005 (hot year) was a good growing season down Niagara way (heck all over Ontario), but the harsh winter created a short crop situation. The good news is that exquisite fruit came about from the ones that did survive the cold temps. They keep the blend of this wine on the QT, but I think it’s high in Franc and low in Merlot – the usual ratio for 2005 Meritage blends – but it’s the nose and taste that gives it away. The nose is a little closed up at this young age, giving off earthy and slightly green pepper aromas – dark fruit is starting to emerge, but ever so slightly. In the mouth, you’ll deal with black fruit, more along the lines of cassis, and some tobacco leaf notes. This one is still quite young with great ageing potential – I would give it another 3 years to find its legs – then it’ll easily last another 5 to 7.
