Jackson-Triggs 2007 Delaine Cabernet-Merlot
Donald Triggs and his wife Elaine, planted in 1999. 2007 was a growing season extraordinaire in Ontario and it seems the winemaking team at J-T took full advantage of it. A blend of 52% Cabernet Sauvignon, 29% Cabernet Franc and 20% Merlot (I know it doesn’t equal 100 but blame the J-T spec sheet, not me) was aged 18 months in a mix of 70% French and 30% American oak – new and 1 year old. But tech stuff means nothing if there’s no delivery where it counts – the senses – and this one appeals to them all (the one’s that play a part in wine appreciation anyway). The major smells are raspberry, strawberry, vanilla and spice; while the taste delivers a lot more. Red fruit start us off leading to black fruit mid-palate, tannins are slightly aggressive but well integrated, this could still use a few more years in the cellar to soften and round out more fully. The grit (tannins) to flavour ratio is excellent and will only improve with time. Price: $22.95 – Rating: ****½
