Calamus Estate 2008 Cosmic Red
To celebrate their 5th Anniversary Calamus decided to create a commemorative wine, (kind of a no-brainer decision if you ask me) ... a blend of the three big Bordeaux: Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Merlot, and although heavy on the Sauvignon (50%) the other two grapes reign back what could have been a green and stalky wine and turn it into something more pleasurable. 2008 was not the year to be making Cabernet Sauvignon, but as the Bordelais have done for centuries and we have learned: blending can only help in weak vintages. This wine needs air to open, but when it does you`ll find red berries in the form of cranberry and red currants on the nose. The palate shows quite a bit of cherry and red currant with a decent amount of acidity and spice that lingers on the tongue well past your swallow. You`ll want to use your decanter to open this wine up, but still drink now because, unfortunately, the celebration won`t last forever. Price: $17.95 - Rating: ****
