Chateau des Charmes 2006 Estate Bottled Riesling

Original Review ... Reviewed – July 2, 2007 … I don’t think I am going to be able to settle the debate here, but I will set you on the road to starting your own. Are the estate bottled wines of Chateau des Charmes are black labeled – as the winery claims; or are they dark-blue, as I have heard many patrons claim? Discuss amongst yourselves as I describe another fine Riesling in the estate-bottled line. This wine comes from 29-year-old vines, which are producing excellent fruit to be making a wine like this one. A nose reminiscent of fresh peaches and apricots with some floral bouquet and very light petrol notes … currently the taste is key-lime and tart apple, but in about six months that should settle and begin to develop some peach and ripe apples to go along with that key lime and Granny Smith; petrol notes should also follow. Des Charmes Rieslings are always pretty ageable too – so lay this one down and watch it develop. Cheers. Price: $16.95

(Re-Tasted July 2012) ... It truly is a summer for Riesling. With the hot weather we've been having I'm not only digging out the new bottles, but also some of the old ones, to see how they are doing. My original review says to lay this one down and watch it develop, and develop it has, into something lovely. The fruit is still very much intact with apricot, apple and pear notes especially on the nose, but they are intact on the palate too; the acidity has stayed right where it needs to be to keep that lovely freshness and there's even a limeade, honey and lemonade note to the finish. This is still one terrific wine that shows no signs of going anywhere, downhill that is, it seems to be holding its own quite well. Wish I had a few more bottles so I could find out where it is going - cause I'd love to take the ride with it (and wouldn't you know it I do - we'll check back in a year or two).

(December 31, 2014) ... Wine number two was a Chateau des Charmes 2006 Riesling, Estate ... Now this one, although older than the Samson, had much more to offer on the nose and the palate.  Nose of wildflower honey and bosc pear skin (which seems quite apropos for wines from this house).  Palate has a fresh mineral quality with a little green apple, both pulp and skin, but it's really the wet stone that shines thru from mid-palate to finish ... This was the wife's favorite.
