Hernder Estate 2006 “Pink”
A novel idea from winemaker Lydia Tomak … mix the bracing acidity of Sauvignon Blanc with the tannin grip of Cabernet Sauvignon in equal parts (50/50) – call this unique concoction “Pink” (although it is closer it a light red), then set it up as a charity fundraiser (for the new cancer center at the local hospital) and watch it fly off the shelf. And that’s exactly what’s happening. At first you have to wonder about the smell of this wine, it’s a touch medicinal with hints of raspberry; but the palate pulls this wine together: strawberry, raspberry – very pretty fruit actually – with good acidity and some tannin bite back (from the 3 week stint the Cab Sauv spent in barrel during fermentation). Well rounded in the mouth, this one mixes the two camps: red lovers and white lovers, and just might have them meeting in the middle – over burgers on the bar-by. Price: $13.95 – Rating: ****
