Another seemingly whacky grape variety that Stratus has stuck in their plot of Ontario soil, planted in 2006 (also see review for Sangiovese). Here we have a 46-case production of a hot climate varietal made in a cool climate style. Aromas show a huge amount of black fruit: cassis and blackberry with cracked black pepper also lingering around. Palate shows off big mouth-drying tannins that are dark and spicy in nature; there’s also an herbal character that joins the spice on the finish. But what’s really impressive is the fight between the acidity and tannins. Price: $42.00 – Rating: ****
