I’m a big fan of Rhone Valley wines, and one place I love to see wines from is this lesser known sub-appellation Plan de Dieu. Turns out it is a next-door-neighbor of Chateauneuf-du-Pape, arguably the most famous and definitely priciest of Rhone Valley’s sub-aps, and yet the prices barely reflect its proximity to the Pape. Though over the years I’ve seen a little creepage happening and this one is the most expensive I’ve seen here in Ontario to date – but keep in mind it is still great value: mocha, cherry and herbal notes keep this one humming along, and that gorgeous plum finish makes you keep coming back for more. Easily another 5 year in this bottle – maybe more. (****+)
