Bodegas Los Frailes 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon, Sinergia

You have to really search (or want to read the back label) to find out the winery that makes this wine is not “Sinergia”, it is in fact Bodegas Los Frailes, a winery in Spain that has been in existence since 1771 and is in its 13th generation of operation. They are also an organic / biodynamic winery. But the real surprise is none of the above, it’s that this is a Cabernet Sauvignon from Spain, somewhat of a rarity in the land of Tempranillo and Grenache – think of how rare Mas La Plana from Torres is, and how foolhardy it seemed when they focused on that grape in Spain. Nice to see another fool-hardy producer doing just as well. This Cab has more in common with California than with the Torres version: ripe and juicy with black fruit, oak, and hint of chocolate; I think this would fool any of your Cali-Cab friends and at a quarter the price of Napa – so give it a try.  Rating: ****
